Information for Landlords – Tory Leader & Landlords Association Opposes New HMO Law

by admin on April 8, 2010

The Residential Landlords Association (RLA) is backing Tory leader David Cameron thanks to his pledge to oppose recent government plans to attempt to break up areas of concentrated shared student housing surrounding popular universities and colleges.

Cameron raised an Early Day Motion calling for a revocation of the order, which came into effect on the 6th April and changes the definition of “houses in multiple occupation” relating to planning concerns.

The RLA are making use of social media for their cause, creating a protest petition on the No. 10 website which has already gained over two thousand electronic signatures, as well as a Facebook group with a thousand members, declaring “rushed law is always bad law”.

Communities and Local Government (CLG) announced the new rules for HMO landlords earlier in the year, proposing a new Use Classes Order, meaning that landlords will need planning permission in order to rent out properties to groups of people who are not part of the same family. Condemned as deplorable and draconian social engineering by the RLA, the CLG is attempting to control how and where people in shared accommodation are allowed to live.
