Emeco 1006 Navy Chair

If you can trust one piece of furniture it should be the aluminium chair from Emeco. It was built to be used on U.S. Navy destroyers and submarines, so it can handle more than it’s fair share of punishment!  It’s actually made from one continuous piece of aluminium without seams, so is designed to be entirely maintenance-free, and as it’s made out of aluminium it shouldn’t go rusty even in salty sea air. The fact you can buy them second-hand and they still look new shows how durable this classic design is.

Tetris Furniture

Just because something needs to be built to last it doesn’t mean it can’t have some charm. These bookshelf storage solutions are inspired by the shapes of the blocks in the classic computer game Tetris. As well as looking totally unique the box construction means that they are hugely stable and should survive for years.

Table Made With Bulletproof Glass

You might not think a glass coffee table could be described as indestructible but this piece certainly is. The glass in the table is bullet proof and has been shot at by an ak47. This means each piece is truly a one off, but it also proves how durable they are!

However as this has been designed by renowned designer Aviad Gil, it’s most likely to expensive for the average student household, but durable none-the-less!

Naoto Fukasawa Wan Lamp

If you had to think of one piece of homeware that isn’t indestructible you’d probably never think of a lamp but this fancy piece is really well put together. Protecting the light bulb from shattering is a translucent polycarbonate sheet, and the lamp itself is made from a double-walled, molded aluminum shell. So not one you’ll be able to easily break.

Huge Bean Bags

If you’re really worried about the damage a student house party could do to your furniture maybe a really big bean bag is the way to go; it’ll replace a sofa and is pretty much unbreakable unless you release the beans!

I remember the days when student digs were more Rising Damp than luxury loft apartments, but hey, things have moved on and now Manchester’s students are returning to luxury living quarters to lay their weary heads after a night on the booze (and a hard day’s studying?!)!

Our ‘Refresh’ service has proved a hit this year, as we’ve heard stories of student tenants turning down year-old mattresses and walking away from properties if the desk doesn’t match the wardrobe! But at just £100 a pop for landlords to replace a double divan bed, and £150 buying a full bedroom set, it’s a small price to pay for investors to make their properties stand out from the crowd and attract the cream of the student tenant crop. We’re glad to be doing our bit for parents too – as they can rest easy that their darlings aren’t returning to rat-infested digs, but more a home from home environment. And they can only hope that beautifully furnished and fitted rental accommodation will instil a smidgen of pride in their kids’ surroundings – so the washing up won’t pile up to Leaning Tower of Pisa proportions!
